Closet clutter makes it harder to choose an outfit in the morning because it’s harder to see the clothing items that are hidden underneath. You may also find yourself walking around certain piles of clothing, meaning that clutter is slowing you down — you could be in and out of your closet a lot faster.

Closet Clutter

Even though it’s no one’s intention to have a cluttered closet, many of us find ourselves with one, so we’re going to go through the tips that we’ve found to help us keep our closets spick and span.

Having the Proper Storage

Every bedroom closet comes with a bar across the top for hanging your clothes, and it may also have some built in shelf space at varying heights. This is just the basics of proper storage, and for people with a larger wardrobe, it simply isn’t enough.

It’s possible to arrange a large wardrobe nicely into a small closet, but you’ll need the proper help. For example, you’ll probably benefit from rolling storage for smaller items such as undergarments and accessories. A hanging rack or shoe rack placed at the bottom of your closet will remove some of the clutter from the entryway of your home, and will help keep your closet organized.

Make sure you have enough hangers for the clothing items that should be stored hanging:

  • Dresses
  • Suits
  • Dress shirts

Shrinking your Wardrobe

The fact is most of us have enough clothing as it stands, so reducing the amount of clothing and accessories you own will not affect the quality of your life. Before parting with an item of clothing you might later regret giving away, you may want to test yourself to see what your life would be like if the item went missing from your closet.

Oprah issued a challenge to her viewers which asked them to flip all the items of clothing that they own inside out. After wearing an item, turn it right side out and hang it back up. In a few months’ time, you’ll be able to see which items you wear most frequently, and which can go. Of course, it’s always a good idea to reserve a few pieces for special occasions.

Garbage, Donation, or Consignment

As you go through your closet, you’ll have different piles which decide where things will ultimately end up. Before giving anything away, make sure that you haven’t thrown out something you meant to keep.
