Hazardous MaterialsHow to Dispose of Hazardous Waste Properly

JuNKiT staff are experts at furniture removal, appliance removal, carpet removal, construction material removal and many other types of junk removal.  However, as we are licensed by the Ministry of Environment, we are not able to dispose of hazardous materials.

What Are Considered Hazardous Materials?

Proper hazardous material disposal starts with learning what is considered harmful. Some household products contain ingredients toxic to public health and the environment. Proper disposal of toxic waste is essential to keeping everyone inside and outside your home safe and healthy.

Common Hazardous Waste at Home

Everyday household products considered hazardous include paint and other solvents, motor oil and antifreeze, fluorescent lighting, propane tanks, pesticides, smoke detectors, and some types of batteries. Correct disposal of these hazardous household products is your responsibility. Your standard junk removal companies will not collect these items. However, you can rent disposal bins in Toronto to accomplish the task.

How to Dispose of Hazardous Waste Properly

Once you identify the harmful materials in your home, you can learn the ways to dispose of them properly. You can also determine the right type of garbage bins to use to prevent leakage and other problems.

Household Products

Your cleaning products (e.g., drain cleaner), insect repellents, and gardening products (e.g., weed killer) are considered too dangerous for general trash. Before you throw them out, read their labels to see how you should pack and secure them.

Batteries

Batteries use different chemicals with corrosive properties. Before throwing out your batteries, look for the proper dumping site. Most cities have designated drop-off locations for proper battery disposal.

Paints and Other Solvents

The chemicals in paints, paint thinners, and sealants are harmful. When your pets or neighbourhood animals get into your trash and ingest these products, they can be poisoned. Find out if the hardware store where these products were bought have recycling programs.

Automotive Products

The chemicals used in most automotive products are toxic, corrosive, and flammable. Make sure they are tightly sealed before disposing of them. Additionally, consider asking your local mechanic if they have disposal systems for these items.

Knowing where to dispose of hazardous materials is essential to preventing accidents. If you’re unfamiliar with the proper drop-off sites, a quick internet search will help you. You may also ask your waste management company even if they don’t handle hazardous materials. They might know a place that does.
